First, unplug the two wire connector on the alternator. Then connect a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to the “F” terminal on the alternator. Start the engine. Using a volt meter, test to see if the battery is charging (usually a minimum of 13.5 volts). If the battery is charging, the problem is with the regulator or the wiring. If it is not charging, your alternator is faulty.
An astute reader was kind enough to offer his suggestions on the proper way to test an alternator:
First, unplug the two wire connector on the alternator. Then connect a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal to the “F” terminal on the alternator. Start the engine. Using a volt meter, test to see if the battery is charging (usually a minimum of 13.5 volts). If the battery is charging, the problem is with the regulator or the wiring. If it is not charging, your alternator is faulty.

About Steve
Steve was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1957. He grew up in a time
and place where cars were worshipped, and none more so than the
“American Muscle Car,” although this was a phrase that wasn't coined
until decades later.By the age of twelve he was repairing just about
anything with an engine. |
